Warts can be a virus (infection), or non-viral. Viral warts are usually shown already in childhood. Seborrhoeic (degenerative) are shown on people at the age over 40.
Most viral warts, called vulgar verrucas, are benign. It is just an aesthetic problem, or else they present walking or writing complications.
Some types of warts, however, may be precursors of serious diseases, e.g. neck of the womb cancer at women or penis cancer at men. This is called oncogenic-positive genital warts.
In any case, it is good to let your doctor dermatologist to examine the warts and determine the procedure for further treatment or propose the method of removal.
The most common method for removal of warts with good results is liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy). The essence of treatment is to freeze the wart tissue to temperatures well below zero, we do not use this method for genital warts.
The second method of wart removal is CO2 laser excision (excise) or evaporation (burn off) of warted tissue. This procedure is one-time - the wart is removed completely within one procedure.

But the removal of warts itself does not protect you against relapse, or more precisely, new infection. However, we can remove the warts thoroughly, and increase the chance, that own immune system shall finally eliminate the wart virus completely. Of course there are several types of pharmaceuticals to stimulate immunity, that dermatologist may prescribe you to get rid of warts for good.
When burning off the warts with liquid nitrogen you may feel stinging or burning at the area of application, although it is a very gentle procedure. Generally, it is an effective and well-tolerated method.
